Russ & Beth White
Tenwek Hospital

We had a team from Maine Medical Center here this week to do congenital heart surgeries. Their surgeon, cardiologist, intensivists, and cardiac nurses worked alongside our team to care for some very sick patients and to provide more training and experience for our trainees. We are grateful for the time, effort, and resources they shared to be with us. Here are just a few of the patients before and after.

Joshua
, 5, the cheerful little guy with a Ventricular Septal Defect--a hole in his heart--came through surgery well.

Shanise, the 16 y.o. with a hole in her heart, not only came through surgery well, but she has already gone home!

Six-year-old  Blessing wtih Tetrology of Fallot (TOF) (a combination of four heart changes present at birth, including a hole in the heart) is still in the ICU, but is starting to eat and even showing her smile occasionally. These little bodies and sick hearts are very resilient, but sure go through a lot!

Eden,
pictured here with Drs. Lando and Agneta, came in on Monday and was a good candidate for surgery. He also has TOF and has suffered and been admitted for many 'tet spells' (where TOF children turn bluish and faint when pressure changes in the heart and increases the flow of oxygen-poor blood to the body) since August.

Brevan, 3, also post op with TOF, was sitting groggily by his very tired mother. Please pray for the families of our patients. Tenwek staff minister to them as they worry and wait on their children, sit up long nights, juggle family responsibilities at home, and help nurse their children to health.

Erick is a 32 y.o. young man who has suffered with rheumatic heart disease for many years. He suffered a stroke 2 months ago due to a clot from his heart traveling to his brain. This left him with severe weakness on one side and an inability to talk. He was admitted to the ICU over a week ago requiring mechanical ventilation. Russ was on call last weekend and met him in the ICU. He had two enormous clots in his heart with his mitral valve almost completely closed. The team quickly got him stabilized for surgery and they operated last Sunday. His heart was extremely weak and required extended mechanical ventilation and an aortic balloon pump to support him. His breathing tube was finally removed on Friday, and he is now starting to try to talk. He has a long recovery journey ahead of him. He desperately needs your prayers.

We have three children admitted for surgery this week. I only met Henry, who was here a few weeks ago but had to get some other medical issues cleared up before he could return for surgery. He is a cheerful and seemingly strong 13 y.o., but Rheumatic Heart Disease has caused him to be exhausted at slight exertion for the last nine years. He will have two valves replaced. He says he knows Jesus and is excited to be healed. Pray that he will be ready to start the new school year in January feeling stronger than he has in his whole school career!
